Let’s practice it together below. Before you know it, your self-talk will be more empowering, supportive, and energizing – and you’ll see greater progress towards your goals, too!
Q1: What is something you want to change?
Think about something in your life or business you want to change! Maybe it’s a habit, an attitude, or something in your surroundings.
Grab a sheet of paper, or just think aloud for one minute, describing what you want to change. Don’t worry about negatives and positives yet – just focus on getting clear about what you want to be different.
Example:
I want to stop constantly changing my mind. Every time I make a decision, I start second-guessing myself… I don’t want to do that anymore. I don’t like constantly starting projects and then losing steam because I’m not sure I’m on the right path. It’s time for me to quit derailing my progress so I can finally move forward.
Q2: How do you feel?
Write down a few words describing how you feel. What emotions, feelings, and sensations are present for you after writing about what you want to change?
Q3: How can you name it in positive terms?
Read what you wrote in Q1, and notice all the negative words – don’t, can’t, won’t, shouldn’t, stop, quit… any word that comes before what you don’t want any more of!
“I want to stop…”
“I don’t like…”
“It’s time to quit…”
Then, write or think aloud for one more minute – this time, change all your negative statements into positive ones describing the new future you do want to create.
This step may be more challenging, because you’ll have to think creatively and push your brain to come up with alternatives to the habits, patterns, and behaviors you already know.
But that’s the magic of it! You’re shifting focus onto what you want to create, not what you want to release.
Example:
I want to start trusting my decisions. Every time I make a decision, I want to stick to it and trust the process until the job is done. I will start new projects knowing I will finish them, because I trust my judgment, and maintain my energy and resolve all the way through. I’ll complete projects and make progress forward, because I’m able to focus on each task in its own time.
Q4: How do you feel?
Answer the question again! How do you feel after answering Q3? Maybe you feel the same, but maybe you feel just a little different! Notice the emotions and feelings you’re experiencing, and write them down.
